sound barriers
Tall plants and bushes will keep your garden private, shielding it from the gaze of curious onlookers. A living willow like this will also help to block out any noise and absorb pollution from nearby roads.
IDEAL - ROOM - LOCATIONS
Room Location
Bedrooms Facing north east to south east to see the sun rising.
Kitchen, workrooms South east to south west so they stay bright and
airy in the day. If southern space is cramped, they
can also be located to the north as these rooms
often produce their own heat.
Living, dining rooms South to north west so they are washed by the
evening sun.
Gardens Facing south-east to west so they are sunny in the
afternoon and early evening.
Halls and utility rooms North facing to act as a buffer against the cold
in winter. *(except Asia-Malaysia)
Bathrooms East for morning people and west for
evening people.

Protection from the sun
If your home is over-heating because of a poorly designed roof, consider the following:
- Installing heat reflecting aluminium foil and insulation in the attic space or under the roof tiles to reduce heat build up in the roof.
- Increasing ventilation to the attic space by adding some louvres and wind chimneys which catch the prevailing breeze.
- Building your roof out over sun-facing east and west sides of your home to protect it from direct sunlight.
- Painting metal roofs a light colour to reflect more of the heat. Special paints that reflect more than two thirds of the sun's heat are now available in most hardware stores.
